Social media isn't making us dumber, it's poor critical reasoning skills and a lack of desire among some of us to inquire deeper and challenge not only what we hear and what we read, but to be constantly trying to challenge our own preconceptions.

And Sam, I only ever heard of you through social media. Make of that what you will.

Was going to say this too.

Or merely exposing the less dumb to the intelligence gap that’s existed out of sight until now. Social media gives you what you ask of it. The pity is that many are asking for confirmation bias without knowing what it is.

Intelligence aside, one irony is that it may be making us lonelier. I wrote a short essay on this with summary of an
@TheAtlantic article, if you have a few mins to read. https://www.janmilligan.co.uk/blog/facebook-is-social-media-healthy-or-bad-for-us … -
This is almost certain if you allow social media to control you, not you controlling it.
-
Agreed, ultimately it’s up to the individual. Alas many people haven’t developed the awareness and/or capacity to withstand social media‘s design to take advantage of such weaknesses of will, perhaps especially among children and adolescents.
-
Most definitely. Facebook and Instagram both can seem like life resumés for many users. This is bourne out of insecurities and will no doubt feed them. I was certainly one who was like this until I deleted Facebook 7 years ago. I let it control me, not me control it.

Tons of research on the effects of filter bubble algorithms and echo chambers. And L/R reciprocity When combined w moral psychology datasets of polerization, coupled w the rise of Alt Right & Leftist dogmas, it becomes a powderkeg of cruel stupidity

Social media just shows stupidity that used to be hidden. I'm not a pessimist either, because it's good to know what's "out there" and I believe that it's plausible that all the transparency will eventually make an average human smarter, not dumber.
