1/ OK, fine. So first question is, what matters? And why? Because we all gonna die in a massive solar flare in a few billion years, right?https://twitter.com/SamHarrisOrg/status/951276346529009665 …

Getting from “Is” to “Ought” 1/ Let’s assume that there are no ought’s or should’s in this universe. There is only what *is*—the totality of actual (and possible) facts.

2/ oh dear. So now we have the first sneaking in of something new to (1), conscious minds. And that changes things, big. Because evolution of range of free-will. Conscious choice. Biggies. Which you don't mention. #Philosophy, #ethicshttps://twitter.com/SamHarrisOrg/status/951276355437686784 …

      Tim Skellett added,

2/ Among the myriad things that exist are conscious minds, susceptible to a vast range of actual (and possible) experiences.

3/ Death sucks too. Should we always prefer to avoid death rather than sacrificing ourselves to save others? Also, is something morally wrong only if it causes us individual pain? Like a hot-stove?https://twitter.com/SamHarrisOrg/status/951276362387591169 …

      Tim Skellett added,

      Sam HarrisVerified account @SamHarrisOrg
3/ Unfortunately, many experiences suck. And they don’t just suck as a matter of cultural convention or personal bias—they really and truly suck. (If you doubt this, place your hand on a hot stove and report back.)

4/ = "We are all part of Nature, so let's make Nature suck a little less". Fine, OK. But it proves nothing so far. Also, should we exterminate smallpox, even if that causes smallpox pain? Or if it doesn't affect us personally? How about lions? Elephants?https://twitter.com/SamHarrisOrg/status/951276367949238272 …

      Tim Skellett added,

      Sam HarrisVerified account @SamHarrisOrg
4/ Conscious minds are natural phenomena. Consequently, if we were to learn everything there is to know about physics, chemistry, biology, psychology, economics, etc., we would know everything there is to know about making our corner of the universe suck less.

5/ = "If we *should* do anything, we should avoid doing X". Go back and see (3). Bring on a trolley case. Also, now we have a "should" introduced magically, which did not exist in (1). Go and see Hume.https://twitter.com/SamHarrisOrg/status/951276372294553601 …

      Tim Skellett added,

5/ If we *should* to do anything in this life, we should avoid what really and truly sucks. (If you consider this question-begging, consult your stove, as above.)

6/ NO, REALLY? SRSLY? WE MIGHT GET SUBJECTIVE EXPERIENCES 'WRONG'? You don't say. So exactly how are we going to judge what is moral? Pain? Bring on the pain of a vaccination needle!https://twitter.com/SamHarrisOrg/status/951276376837050374 …

      Tim Skellett added,

      Sam HarrisVerified account @SamHarrisOrg
6/ Of course, we can be confused or mistaken about experience. Something can suck for a while, only to reveal new experiences which don’t suck at all. On these occasions we say, “At first that sucked, but it was worth it!”

7/ "selfish and shortsighted". 🙄 You don't say. So back to my questions in (3) and onwards. Plus, "(By what measure of “better”? Fewer things suck.)", oh my, so is it OK for me to genocide a few million if my descendents have a better life? And so on.https://twitter.com/SamHarrisOrg/status/951276380997681152 …

      Tim Skellett added,

7/ We can also be selfish and shortsighted. Many solutions to our problems are zero-sum (my gain will be your loss). But *better* solutions aren’t. (By what measure of “better”? Fewer things suck.)

Either you don't understand "fewer" or "suck." Or you're not making a serious attempt to think this through.

No. I am pointing out that you are not tackling the very real core issues, proceeding from very simple basics, and not getting anywhere where ethics complexity happens.
