But first, a little housekeeping...

Your two podcasts with him changed my life. I was a utilitarian for 6 years and now think constructor theory is our best formal way to talk about ethics ("we should create knowledge)". Thank you both!

I don't see how this solves the "ought from an is" issue at all. It seems to state that at best, you can only use facts, to modify moral maxims. Or am I missing something?
-
It sidesteps the issue: You can't derive an "is" from an "is", either, without a (fallible) explanatory theory- and so the same tools we use for "is" -> "is" reasoning (creating objective explanations ie. knowledge) can be used to create (fallible) objective moral knowledge.

Thank you very much! Perfect clarification. That was perfect. I guess I come back to my main issue with Sam's route to morals... create these new morals via reason by who's standard? Communism, comes to mind as a rational utopia, and it was essentially hell on earth.

This is making some weird category errors. We would expect preferences to be a matter of unreason (at least in part). Reason is epistemically or instrumental. That means it informs values, but can't determine them.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on the cow from Douglas Adams's "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe" as a moral experiment. Is it moral to eat a suicidal cow (not suffering, enjoys the thought of its death) that wants to be eaten? Is it moral to make one?

That's a false dichotomy though. Why must those be our only options? If morality is emergent and inherent to our species, then we've successfully been navigating it through religion, culture and ideas that pragmatically survive or fail. Why must we now throw our hands up?
-
Pragmatism fails pragmatically.
