Good for @SamHarrisOrg to start on this coming from the convo with @benshapiro. [I will later give my version of this (also without a g-d) which I gave privately to Ben, Sam and @BretWeinstein after the event.]https://twitter.com/samharrisorg/status/951276346529009665 …

Getting from “Is” to “Ought” 1/ Let’s assume that there are no ought’s or should’s in this universe. There is only what *is*—the totality of actual (and possible) facts.

This is what I mean when I talk about morality as a "navigation problem."

Your reasoning is just a restatement of utilitarianism. Your "oughts" are just "things that increase utility", and your "is" are theories about how to get there. Ben's counter is that the concept of utility, from the perspective of purposeless universe, is arbitrary.

Putting it differently: Your navigation implies a superiority of destination, or at least direction. Ben would probably say that the direction matters for reasons other than its mapping onto human satisfaction, pleasure, and pain.

No. “Is” is not a theory of how to get to a desired place. “Is” = what is true. “Is” = reality. Experience = a small subset of “is”. Experience = the only thing in the universe that cares about how to act/be, “Ought”.

Perhaps I was a little careless with words. "is" is a theory about the nature of the universe, and what actions are likely to lead in the direction of "ought". Ben and Sam's disagreement, however, appears to be more about the nature of "ought", not its connection to "is".

In a deterministic universe, the best possible “OUGHT” already “is”. When we say “ought”, it is our attempt to find what already exists, what already is.https://twitter.com/biruckanmaw/status/951305562473472000 …

Yes, I think we agree. The best possible “Ought” = “is”. We attempt to determine how we “Ought” to be, because we don’t know the future. But in deterministic universe, it “is” already there, whether we find it or not.
