Getting from “Is” to “Ought” 1/ Let’s assume that there are no ought’s or should’s in this universe. There is only what *is*—the totality of actual (and possible) facts.

8/ So what is morality? What *ought* sentient beings like ourselves do? Understand how the world works (facts), so that we can avoid what sucks (values).

But not everyone's values are the same. We only agree they are the same when they overlap without a problem. Objective morality is an emergent property.

Why shouldn't we be selfish? Why do you think the less selfish solution is the better one even when we benefit a lot from the selfish one?

Economists have a nice set of tools and ideas (such as Pareto efficiency, which you allude to here) which can be effectively used to construct formal definitions of morality. You should consider doing a podcast on this.

Or more things suck less.

So, to build a moral framework based in that principle we need to find a way to cuantisize misery. Well, that sucks :c

You speak of avoiding things that suck. What about enacting something that sucks in order to bring about a better-for-all solution?

You just jumped unjustifiably on step 5 from an Is to an Ought. Sure, "if we ought to do anything, we should avoid what sucks", but that assumes that we ought to do anything. I'm a utilitarian, I think there are moral truths, but the concept of moral obligation is tricky to me.

My gain is your loss is too capitalistic thinking. Equality for all...

I strongly believe &what if a win-loss (zero sum) is more stable state wrt any supposedly better tradeoff state & let's say it is fact. So then"is" is better than "ought" collectively & we r stuck with "what sucks" individually Limited point: in some cases "ought" = "is"

I see why I should avoid experiences that suck. But why should I care that you do? Because I ought to, and I don't think you can derive that 'ought' from 'is' without question begging.

And who determines what sucks?
