Great discussion. I learned a lot and appreciated Sam & Bret venturing into forbidden areas such as race, intersectionality, the lack of courage in academia, etc. These topics need a public airing from such serious and courageous intellects. Bret lost a job over principle.

I'm surprised @BretWeinstein claimed every cultural feature is adaptive. Lots of biological organisms have spandrels, cultures do too. And in culture there is more than just evolutionary processes in play.

I was struck by that too, although was it every CULTURAL FEATURE? I may be mistaken but I thought it was more the metaphors and rituals of religious practice, something like "Do you think all religious practices had or still have adaptive benefit?" Bret was all in, "Yes." Cool.

This should clarify my position. Note the word "presumed". It's important.https://twitter.com/BretWeinstein/status/943953675399004160 …

Every costly aspect of culture that has lasted over evolutionary time should be presumed adaptive. The greater the expense, and longer the duration of persistence, the more secure the assertion of adaptiveness. There's room for a bit of cultural hitchhiking, but not much. https://twitter.com/jmreagle/status/943942211078623232 …

"Presumed" presumes evolution is only force. (And "evolutionary time" and "costly" would all need to be unpacked.) Path dependency is very relevant to culture/society development and direction.

“Presumed” does not imply that evolution is the only force, but it is the longest-lasting force at play in any species.

My argument is that "metaphorical truth" is an important phenomenon necessary to understand human evolutionary history. If the hypothesis is correct, 'metaphorical truth' is itself factual, like 'lekking' or 'echolocation'. Your truck is beside the point (and double parked). https://twitter.com/AtheistStoned/status/943155632278069248 …

Sam you should seriously consider nixing the Q&A. The people who go up and ask questions tend have no sense of etiquette. It’s almost always excruciating. Pre submitted Qs would be better.

Sam, I believe that many of your listeners would like you to make an episode of the podcast dedicated exlusively to means, present and possible, of Intellectual self-improvement, such as speed reading, sleep-learning and such, maybe shed some light on it from yr professional POW.

Another terrific conversation apart from the foray into your taking up meat again. Opportunity missed to be more honest about ethics in deciding feeling slightly below par is sufficient cause to contribute to the terror animals experience going to slaughter.
