We're working on it. Unfortunately big pharma doesn't wanna fund something that's gonna see resistance. we need a game changer
The market and the government are owned by the 0.01%.
.@SamHarrisOrg How about "don't bring in illegal immigrants with TB"
It’s not for lack of trying, I can assure you. Science is hard and evolution of bacteria quick.
maybe masochistic but we brought this on ourselves? Over use & not finishing scrips. Little scare = more respect 4 science?
I'm frustrated by "just let it play out" rhetoric. Dead people don't learn lessons. (1/3)
Diseases are like wildfires. Innocent people get hurt and they can get away from you. WHO wanted to (2/3)
"let Liberia handle Ebola" and waited too long. I don't think you would feel that way if you had VRE or other
unfair & stable system is more sustainable than a perpetually deferred precipice. The truth doesn't care what any of us thinks
@nytimes there should also be measures taken to reduce unneeded prescriptions of antibiotics
Would only make sense if controlled usage applied :/
Proven way to cure disease is govt intervention, so tax the 0.01% to get the $ to make it happen. #itsnotbrainscience @nytimes
Is there sufficient research for bacteriophage therapy? Seems like it's theoretically a viable alternative.
There was a lot decades ago, especially in Russia/USSR. Fell out of fashion but I think it’s super promising.
If antibiotics fail, we'll need to go to phages. Phages evolve along with bacteria and are species-specific (limiting, but safe)
I completely agree (proposed as much years ago as a first year grad student). I’d be surprised if to not being pursued.
As a lawyer, I wonder to what extent discoveries in phage therapy can be patented to allow for profitable research.
That’s a good point. Most phage therapy would require heavy modification of the phage DNA. I’d bet it’d be patentable.
Not familiar with that side of IP law, but I've heard of patenting of many DNA-modified organisms, so let's hope it works.
