And I do not deny that the NSA story could be huge. I await further disclosures. @ggreenwald 's character is a separate issue.

@travisrgriffin Even metadata? If you could save thousands by having your phone bills scrutinized, you'd decline? -
@SamHarrisOrg@travisrgriffin I know I did not just read that horribly specious assertion by my boy Harris. High caliber men also folly. -
@marctheiler@travisrgriffin Specious how? You should do what you will feel like an idiot for not having done (e.g. wear a seatbelt). -
@SamHarrisOrg@travisrgriffin a seatbelt is a good idea as no balancing is ever entertained. -
@marctheiler In the beginning, everyone was aware of the trade offs. I know someone who refused to wear one until he rolled his car. -
@SamHarrisOrg The only way we will ever be significantly more safe is when we as a people have dissolved all uncritical frameworks.#NSA

@SamHarrisOrg@elroer Is there an evidence that the gathering of metadata has prevented any act of terrorism? -
@RevKevinChilds@elroer They certainly claim it has. (e.g. in NYC) -
@SamHarrisOrg I can't believe that a rational mind can use that argument: can you prove the actual reasons for something that didn't happen? -
@hctrdz Of course. They can tell you how they caught Najibullah Zazi before he bombed the subways (as they have). - 1 more reply

@SamHarrisOrg@elroer clearly they don't use the data for legitimate things they should be, otherwise Boston, new town, etc. avoidable. -
@robdshafer@elroer That seems a reckless conclusion. Something that is effective can still fail -- or people might neglect to use it. -
@SamHarrisOrg@elroer valid, but one would think with vast amounts of our purchases, trends, convos, etc they'd predict a bit more.

@SamHarrisOrg Would you accept Russia mining US data to defend against Chechen terrorism?@elroerThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@SamHarrisOrg@elroer We still don't know that metadata analysis is even effective. It didn't stop Boston or Sandy Hook. -
@SamHarrisOrg@elroer We need data on (1) How invasive is it really? and (2) How effective is it at protecting us? Currently we have neither

@SamHarrisOrg@elroer Is there any evidence that metadata collection works? Are we supposed to take claims of proper oversight on faith? -
@toddcaton@SamHarrisOrg Im wondering the same thing, guess blind belief isnt really lost on all of us.. -
@elroer@SamHarrisOrg Indeed. Guess I'm not gonna hear back from Sam.
