To be clear, I don’t condone milkshake attacks. It’s wrong. Is it violence? No, unless you’re the super-sensitive type. Is it funny? Yes. Is it a gateway to terrorism? Come on. Not condoning something doesn’t mean you can’t find it hilarious. It’s like those funny fails videos.https://twitter.com/Hallothere12/status/1131033537283538944 …

I thought the milkshake issue would have gone by now. It's really dragging out, these pointless political diversions usually only last a couple of weeks tops.

It absolutely is violence. I don't think you need to be 'sensitive' to feel this way. I suspect you'd change your mind if ex-Muslims became fair game for this sort of stuff. The humour factor would wear off fast.

Your analogy gets the power dynamic wrong. Farage is the powerful figure here. This is more like a woman throwing a milkshake on an incel, or an LGBT ex-Muslim throwing one on a homophobic mullah—not the other way around. Is it wrong? Yes. Am I going to lose sleep over it? No.

I don't think the power dynamic is the factor. I think principles & the inevitable escalation is, which we have already seen. I was just surprised to see you making light of it with acid throwing/appearance jokes. That's your right of course, I just think there are better options

We can joke about anything. And I just don’t see a random citizen throwing a milkshake at Farage as “violence.” I see it as ridicule, even commentary. It’s a prank. No one is seriously concerned about physical harm here. They’re concerned about humiliation and insult. /1

I've never made that argument. However, the normalization, encouragement and making light of this sort of thing creates the climate where people assume eggs & rocks are know fair game, as we saw with Tommy Robinson in Oldham the other day. Throw things at Robinson. It's fine

Eggs and bricks have been done well before milkshakes too. I don’t think we should assume they’re related. This is more about ridicule, not physical harm. Again, we agree it’s wrong. We just disagree on our definition of physical aggression. I was with you on the Spencer punch.

I don't think it's a coincidence that people celebrated far & wide when Robinson got milkshaked and then him being on the receiving end of eggs and rocks days later. Especially since that didn't happen to him before. I don't want any part in downplaying political assault.

Not convinced that this is common slippery slope. The fact that this Pim Fortuyn case from 2002 is the only example people can pull out to prove this point is evidence of how rare it is. Robinson has been physically attacked well before milkshakes. Not convinced it’s related.

All these assaults are mock assassinations (whether the perpetrators know it or not). Pies, milkshakes, glitter, etc. reveal unavoidable weaknesses in the security of their targets and advertise their vulnerability to the whole world. The result is worse than it appears.

History in the Netherlands has proven this is the case. It is a first step that can end up in violence and murder. There is no reason to throw milkshakes or pies to anyone you don’t agree with. It act of aggression that stems from their own powerlessness.

But they are not assassinations. They are not mock assassinations. They are an expression of utter disgust. A humiliation reserved for those who are truly beyond the pale. As a society we appreciate that it is in bad taste but it’s just inside the realms of acceptable behaviour.
