Great discussion but
@SamHarrisOrg continues to be in serious need of better info on facts concerning European immigration.@nfergus+@DouglasKMurray aren't doing him any favours. It's noticeable how his view has been drifting steadily away from reality. http://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/infographics/irregular-arrivals-italy-greece-06-2017/ … -
Glad to see
@mashagessen providing enlightenment (34 minute mark) on the dubiousness of linking immigration directly to the rise of identitarian right in Europe. There's good political science on this and guess what. It's nuanced and non-linear, depending on several factors. -
Now we need someone to point out the lunacy of describing current immigration to Europe as "unchecked". I've said it before and I'll say it again: Sam needs better friends when it comes to the topic of Europe, frankly.
-
The to and fro they had about Russian “public opinion” was annoying. She knew what Sam meant - which he nuanced correctly - but went straight for the literal interpretation. To suggest 86% of Russians have views in lockstep with Putin’s propaganda is just plain stupid.
-
I disagree. Public opinion is meaningless where there freedom of speech and assembly is not possible. Fear keeps everyone in lockstep. "If anyone asks you about X say you agree with Y" becomes as commonplace a piece of advice as any other. This was Portugal pre-1974, for example.

Gessen sounded needlessly confrontational (ok, no big deal) but she lost me completely when she included Bibi Netanyahu in a group of tyrants such as Dutarte and Putin.
-
I was mad at the start of the interview but she sufficiently destroyed her own credibility as the interview went on with comments like that. To say Russia is a closed county like North Korea is just insanity
-
I'm glad I'm not alone in spotting that. I must say, her contrarian style grated on me as well. At times it seemed like Sam was being scolded by a strict schoolmistress. Plus I just read her latest piece in the

Why was

She's Russian. They're all like that.

I'd have to go back and listen to Sam's interview with

Loving it! Masha talking some sense into Sam against his sometimes naive bias and “Dumb ejaculation of a teenager’s ego” (Trump’s desire for applause and power) best line ever!
ps. Sam go and live abroad for a few years. Experience will open your eyes. -
I assume you're familiar with the colonial Dutch satirist Multatuli. He mocked the kind of person who consider themselves experts on a foreign country based on nothing but a period of residence.
-
Imagine how Multatuli would have satirized those who consider themselves experts and have never lived there, only going on a selective few worst incident accounts.
-
Well I’ve lived abroad for decades and think Sam vastly understates the problem. The west is too naive.
