Let's be clear, @SamHarrisOrg: you are endorsing Thiessen's claim that the FRC — which endorsed torture for gay men, and whose founder has well-documented ties to David Duke — is not a hate group?
Wow. I see palling with the far right is a bigger priority for you than "reason".

Sam Harris has always claimed to be pro-empirical fact and anti-religious dogma, but the funny thing is that whenever being those things conflict with being anti-Islam or anti-brown people, he conveniently chooses to be those instead.
-
See here. Harris gives his seal of approval to a article defending an antigay fundamentalist hate group that endorsed child torture and has ties to white supremacists — because it also trashes the SPLC for criticizing a critic of Islam. He does this shit all the time.
-
And his fans, like Jordan Peterson's fans, will bleat and whine that I'm "taking him out of context." Well no. I actually used to be a Sam Harris fan. I read The End of Faith several times. Then I woke up and realized what a self-serving hypocrite he is. So don't even.

Just because they do not agree with you or Maajid?
-
Because they are labeling the good guys as dangerous. SPLC has taken a noble pursuit, warning the public of dangerous people, and cheapened it in a time where we need to be calling out and confronting the real racists.
-
So you feel empowered to define who "good guys" are?
-
I feel empowered to speak in defense of people, like Sam Harris, who I’ve read and listened to thoroughly, and assure people they are not racists. Sam Harris is doing good, sound, intellectual work in a time when the culture celebrates anti-intellectual ignorance.
-
he is touring with jordan peterson and in a band with dave rubin whilst talking about race theories with charles murray. that's who sam harris is when he is not whining.
-
“...in a band with...” You give too much credit to Harris & his ties w/people who he agrees w/on single topics. Right now you’re the one whining, good sir. Lumping Harris w/these guys because they found common ground in their disgust w/the hyper progressive left proves his point.

I don’t know how old you are, or how much life experience you have, but I don’t choose the people I agree with, it just kind of happens. Just because you go on tour with someone doesn’t mean your worldviews are perfectly in sync, and know this to be the case with these men.

Of course, the possibility that they made a mistake in this case but still continue to do good work in others is utterly unthinkable...
-
“This case.” The article mentions at least 2 other absurd examples: Ben Carson and the FRC. Anyone who’s followed the issue knows Ayaan was smeared similarly, as was Christina Hoff Sommers. It’s not an anomaly, it’s a pattern.

Opinion: Sam Harris is a complete hypocrite on free speech.

Surely there are better fights right now, Sam?
-
Not to Sam because it’s a direct threat to him and how he is percieved. I think Ezra Klein gave a good explanation why Sam Harris is so focused on this topic.
-
Harris has a platform, and being tacked as racist, or even leaving room for racist inclinations can be a career breaker. We need to use the racism label sparingly for the real racists right now. People like Ezra Kline and organizations like SPLC are cheapening a serious label.
-
A label that we CANNOT afford to cheapen and use lightly right now. Using it flippantly turns everyone into an enemy, then the word has no meaning.
-
you are all postmodern marxists! btw. jordan peterson equates this with a mass murdering ideology which killed up to 100 million people. so when he calls his enemies that he calls them basically mass murderers. those are the friends of sam harris and maajid nawaz.
-
You are mistaken if you think Sam Harris and Jordan Peterson are “friends.”
