some personal news: i've left and i'm now freelance. really proud of the work i've done there, building a fun, thoughtful brand from scratch and learning a lot, but looking forward to stretching my legs and excited for what comes next. my DMs are, of course, open.

identity* obviously typos aside, i'm always amazed by how terrible football treats brand and cultural strategy. not to go all 'form is temporary, class is permanent' but in a sport where fortunes can change minute by minute, these are the choices that keep fans coming back.

i think about this a lot but West Ham's crap crest update in 2016 could've swerved a lot of damage by adding one word. 'London' on its own is generic and infantilising. 'East London' speaks to identify, community, and sense of place. fans literally chant it from the stands.

i think everyone i know who works in any vaguely creative-adjacent field is feeling somewhere between 'haunted' and 'i think i could retrain as an electrician. i heard there aren't enough electricians anymore'

Between the massive media layoffs, the looming bankruptcy of Vice, the studios forcing the writers into a strike & the rise of A.I. there's been a grotesque devaluation of imagination & creativity – during a time where it feels like people are more desperate for it than ever.

it's David Beckham's birthday: so here's a very short piece (~350 words, i believe) i wrote a while back about time, memory, and Becks' infinite final minute of football. i was, as you can probably tell, having a full-blown existential crisis at the time of writing.

i think the most impressive thing here is how long he waits to wipe his gob. he's got it all over him and, as the media scrum closes in, he takes a beat to simply wallow in it.

the ted lasso-fication of the brilliant, thoughtful documentary this is based on pains me in a very specific way. even in the totally superfluous world of modern cinema, this is completely pointless lol

kevin de bruyne’s change of pace and quality of finish is ridiculous, but i loved haaland’s touch and assist (the pass - just in front, luring people out of position towards the loose ball, slightly too far ahead of KDB, but not quite, in a way somehow wrong and also perfect)

finally reading CHAOS and i wasn't expecting this. for a subject so pitch-dark, it's got a real lightness of touch and humour. and despite the well-worn topic, it drags you along its investigation without ever losing steam. superb so far. (ty to for the recc)

a rare non-“fold” tweet but: if we were to, say, dissolve the football club today, i would be fine with that. i’m not sure we improve from here.

The tone was a *little bit* condescending. They said “Hmm… it’s a shame you haven’t gone to uni. Disappointing. But have you seen Mad Men?” i said no. “Hmm… Maybe you should go home and watch Mad Men.” Interview over. Mad Men is really good though, to be fair to them.

Anyway it's been literal years and whenever I remember this I get pissed off all over again. What was your worst interview experience?

in 2013, i was approached to interview for a creative role at a Very Big Ad Agency. i didn’t apply, they cold-emailed me. convinced this was my big break, i took a day off work, and went for an interview they forgot they’d scheduled. They took the meeting with me in a stairwell…
