Native grasslands in western Victoria dominated by Kangaroo Grass have ~1.5t/ha fuel loads. By contrast, exotic grasslands dominated by Phalaris have ~7.7t/ha fuel loads. Lower fuel should lead to lower fire intensity. Well managed native grasslands also resist invasion by weeds

Relief. Australia’s most endangered frogs survive fires in Kosciusko. A credit to all who worked to spread risk through multiple in-field insurance populations. Kudos ⁦⁩ ⁦⁩ ⁦⁩ ⁦

I love this! It's one thing to reduce your plastic waste in research, but another to include it in the methods section of the paper! A great example and inspiration for future research.

Fungal under microscope. Given the right conditions can prolong themselves indefinitely. A fragment can regenerate a whole meaning that a fungal 'individual'—if you’re brave enough to use that word—is potentially . . . 📹©

Isn’t it interesting that the people who deny that climate change is why the Australian fires are so severe, are “columnists” and “commentators” and not “firefighters” or “scientists”?

Ah, the annual disclosure of political donations data. A regular reminder that no matter how much advocacy and advice is offered by scientists to guide policy, it’s hard to compete with a big fat chequebook.
