Potentially unpopular opinion: Grad students should do less formulating their own questions and more external contract work. It’s crazy how much students wander in the wilderness looking for questions when service providers have no shortage of ‘em.https://twitter.com/FrankSchilbach/status/1194478526457679872 …

If the most common, urgent questions (and answers) from industry, policy, etc. aren’t sexy enough for academic publishing, perhaps it’s the journals that should adapt. Converge until the market clears, y’all.https://twitter.com/economeager/status/917791743285788673?s=21 …

💯. Professors can facilitate this by investing deeply in research partnerships with local/state agencies and organizations. So much learning opportunity outside the university walls. https://twitter.com/SallyLHudson/status/1194594982029676546 …

For me, working with governments (initially to get data) opened up a bunch of new ideas.

@ElizabethSetren is another great researcher who walks this walk. Her partnership with Boston Public Schools has generated impactful work that is immediately policy-relevant.

Agreed! One of my dissertation papers came straight out of consulting work I did for the World Bank. I think it also helps keep perspective - doing research that directly contributes to policy can make the PhD process feel more meaningful.

As a grad student, I find a lot of colleagues technically very well trained but with little connection to or contextualized knowledge about the practice of policy making. A lot of this I think is because we privilege technical skills in admissions and coursework.
