Been thinking about Pauper lately. It seems like there is always something problematic in the format, no matter what is printed/banned. At what point is if it fair to wonder if the format itself is inherently flawed?
I should say that I like Pauper (at least most of the time), but I feel like we've been bouncing from problem to problem since Peregrine Drake was printed a few years ago now. Like 80% of the time the fomat is in "calling for bans" mode and 20% of the time "good/stable" mode.
No more so than Vintage.
This is probably true, although Vintage is such a niche format I'm not sure its flaws matter very much. People who love it will love it regardless, maybe Pauper is similar
You could say the same thing about Modern tbh.
No but you see it's okay if the problematic thing uses the graveyard for some unwritten reason. Also Modern costs so damn much that there's always a showing of off-meta decks people like/can afford. In Pauper its very easy to just play the deck with the best results.
I think it was fun and entertaining to play before the Blue bannings. Any format where an Aggro-Tempo deck is good is a good format. Now Pauper it’s super slow and super boring.
Mengu, I love you, but Gush was unreasonable and busted and I hated playing the UR decks

Astrolabe printing made every other deck you play against mono quad splash or just straight up 5 color from what I can gather.
I think it's impossible to have a perfect system; everything is flawed - somethings more than others. It's determining what the acceptable level of flaws for a thing to have and still be enjoyable.
