UPDATE: The statue of slave trader Robert Milligan has now been removed from West India Quay.
It’s a sad truth that much of our wealth was derived from the slave trade - but this does not have to be celebrated in our public spaces.

Honest question: did you know who Robert Milligan was before reading this tweet? Because as far as I can tell all of these statues of slave traders and murderers being taken down is actually make more people aware of their crimes than the statue ever did

I'm going to have to agree with the sentiment that removing these statues has done more to teach about these people's crimes than the statues themselves ever did.
