Nonetheless, while the 2018 blu-ray is certainly not ideal, it is a MASSIVE upgrade from the 2009 blu-ray, not only on the level of attractive imagery. '09 blu displays a wrongheaded aesthetic philosophy of revisionism; '18 blu is simply reparable technical error. (11/ )pic.twitter.com/rYCbPBDMD7

Can't be 100%, but I'm pretty sure that the 2018 blu's issues with blacks are not the result of lazy approximations of what movies "should" look like, or a conscious alteration of the original appearance. It's just incompetence, probably because the HDR 4K got more care. (12/ )pic.twitter.com/7dlaxGxQCF

So long as the original elements are kept in good condition, screw-ups like this are temporary and easily adjusted. The barrier to an ideal presentation of THE MATRIX on blu is of money and man-hours, not artistic ignorance or cynicism. (13/ )pic.twitter.com/7HXhqAV0Yf

You may prefer the revisionist look of the 2009 edition; that's fine. But the impact isn't just on superficial aesthetics; in scenes with e.g. a yellowish or golden hue (e.g. training, the oracle), the extra green inflicts damage on the film on a tangible symbolic level. Just to emphasize: it's entirely possible that the HDR presentation on the 2018 UHD/4K blu-ray completely or partially alleviates my concerns about the black levels on the 2018 1080p Blu-ray. I wouldn't be surprised, but I haven't the means to find out. (16/ )pic.twitter.com/YnbWJdTpys

THE MATRIX sits at an interesting time in history; DVDs hadn't yet spurred an improvement in scanning and colour preservation, digital colour correction hadn't fully entered the picture. In terms of arguable colour accuracy, it may be the last (iconic) film of its kind. (17/ )pic.twitter.com/IlcV7izAd4

While I strongly object to the 2009 release and its apparent aesthetic motivations, in a sense it has the opportunity to be a blessing in disguise in terms of awakening people to the impact that film preservation revisionism can have even on modern blockbusters. The danger of such revisionism even extends to the digital era; let us not forget that George Lucas has substantially revised the home video editions of his Star Wars prequels and consciously suppressed the availability of the original versions. (19/ )pic.twitter.com/1olBjsRFdP

It's important to remain vigilant and inquisitive and open in matters of film preservation; much credit is due to the posters at http://originaltrilogy.com  who have been largely responsible for collectively preserving the aesthetic legacy of THE MATRIX and many other films. As film lovers we have a responsibility to demand that the original presentation of films is preserved, achieved, or at least approximated whenever possible, and not to suppress that presentation by making it publicly unavailable. (21/25)pic.twitter.com/C4lMoQxFUW

I actually have no major issues with someone — The Wachowskis, Pope, a WB exec, whoever — deciding that it'd be interesting and cohesive to make THE MATRIX appear more visually in line with its trilogy. But neglecting its original appearance for 9 years was unacceptable. (22/25)pic.twitter.com/upFXpiNQLk

THE MATRIX had a considerable impact on culture, and the willfully faulty '09 release has done considerable damage to our collective memory of it. I've spoken to people many times who firmly believed the 2009 blu-ray was accurate to their experience seeing it in theaters. (23/25)pic.twitter.com/OQie3xmPLF

This is the biggest reason why I am willing to give technical faults a big pass as compared to a runaway revisionist train. The new blu-ray serves as a much-needed corrective — and people are unlikely to internalize too-high black levels as integral to the film's look. (24/25)pic.twitter.com/ipH8ED5ONR

I'm hoping to write a blog post more focused on analyzing the film's craft, but tech/preservation deserves its own look, and a Twitter thread seemed an appropriate venue. Thanks for looking through it, folks, and be good to each other. (25/25)pic.twitter.com/wqnZRDWXdf

Believe it or not, there are *still* movies on DVD and blu-ray that are erroneously presented in an open matte format! I have to admit, I've never heard of VHD.

Agree wholeheartedly. I understand a filmmaker wanting to "fix" things they wish they would've originally, but I feel like once you release a movie it becomes not just yours but everyone's and the original release should be preserved/released alongside the altered ones.
