Inception has a linear narrative, unlike most Nolan movies and on a base level sticks to the traditional hero's journey. Even the call to adventure is made very obvious - "Do you want to take a leap of faith or die an old man, filled with regret?"

In the first act we learn a couple of things about the protagonist Cobb: - He's traumatised by his wife's death - He is unable to dream, which to me translates to Cobb having a sense of foreshortened future. He is even unable to even imagine his children's faces in his dreams

Cobb believes he caused his wife's death by incepting the idea that her world is not real. This is at the core of his trauma with the call to adventure, to incept an idea in a billionaire heir's mind, he is forced to confront his trauma. There's no other way back home.

Dealing with your trauma head on is really hard and takes lot of effort and persistence This is where the dream tech is very interesting would be a revolution if it existed. Since time in a dream is much larger than real world time, it could be a space to deal with trauma

Instead of spending years of your physical resources and health in dealing with trauma, you could dedicate couple of years of dream time. Kind of like an intensive therapy session I suppose - at least in theory

dream tech would be the ultimate productivity/healing hack. And everyone who has dealt with their trauma already deals with it through some hack in some way? - morning journals, working out, therapy, life coaching

Inception also reminded me of Van Der Kolk's Body Keeps Score. Every case study in the books seems to have their own unique ways of taking on their trauma head on - EDMR, yoga, trauma informed massage therapy (and it involves something to do with the traumatic incident itself?)

Coming back to the movie, Cobb seems to have no sense of agency in his dreams, especially when the heist starts and the train from his traumatic memory rolls down through dream 1. It's only much later on, when he shoots down Mal in the snow world dream, he seems to regain agency

The other subplot - The billionair heir repairing his relationship with his father in a dream after he has passed way also hints at how much the movie is invested in the idea of tackling trauma
