Borders and immigration control always ends in violence. That’s their purpose

I have lived amongst you people for six years and I’m still shocked some of you are more likely to be able to name any district rep in some random US state than the name of the prime minister of most European countries lol, anglo-centrism is a hell of a drug sometimes

Honestly... I am so not a british politics hack who thinks she’s in the west wing, I don’t even really know what these caucuses are about/how they work, so the timeline about raw numbers is a mystery to me

I've filed my LL column for this week and whilst I like it (obvs) it also really encapsulates how I feel very bleak about everything so I hope you're not looking for an uplifting read from me tomorrow lol

Said friend has been at Bernie rallies this week and just sent me pics, it looks epic. Also she used to be a conservative back in the day, but 10 years in the capitalist hellhole that's the US radicalises people it seems

I have never watched or cared much about US primaries, but today even I sent a text to my old school friend who now lives in Iowa to ask how she thinks it's going lol

The most scarily impressive thing about the Gov is how easily they've managed to establish their interpretation of things as real & have it repeated unquestioningly by everyone, including Labour, like gospel. Red Wall comes to mind too.

Today is a good day to reshare this article by David Merrit on his son Jack's legacy after the London Bridge stabbing. Let's not forget this.

Civil liberties must be at the forefront of our thinking. Never let the government tell you that we are in a constant state of emergency that needs special measures/powers to deal with. It’s dangerous, playing with fire.

Some tips for leadership election twitter: I’ve muted lots of people I generally like but find atm insufferable in their takes and I also often mute responses to my own tweets if I want to focus on sth else not get drawn into arguing on here. Both helps!

Biggest achievement of 2020 so far is that I got a viral stupid tweet about sth I saw on the tube, rather than any of my incredible political takes, articles or takedowns, very depressing

However much we tell ourselves we’ve “won” the argument because Johnson might inject some cash into businesses or a train line, I think we are nowhere near winning the argument with the public, and it won’t change by turning around and reinforcing their narrative on Brexit

Not only will we have to firefight against the Government, we also have to untangle a narrative in which we all have been framed as the adversary that this campaign has struggled against, and won freedom from. How can we overturn and shift this social/political coalition?

Watching videos of members of the public comment on Brexit night honestly just fills me with dread. It shows how spectacularly we’ve failed to counter the Leave/Johnson propaganda and what an uphill struggle it will be to develop and entrench a counter narrative from the left

Brexit as it’s happening is a major setback for the left because it consolidates a people against an adversary that is defined on ambiguous grounds as “liberal elite”, subsequently shielding the ruling class in power from responsibility. That’s how their coalition works

Genuinely blows my mind how some people seem to think “socialism” or the end of neoliberalism is when the state does a thing, when the power relations in the economy remain unchanged and any of this is clearly based on nationalist politics as well

Johnson will do some state investment - eg he’s spoken about increasing state aid for industry - will this mean lexiteers think we’ve got socialism now and we might as well stop bothering with labour lol
