Mayor Pete broke a major barrier in national politics, and has already earned his place in history for running such a positive, intellect-driven campaign. He also displayed rare insight and self-reflection in his decision to withdraw when he did- his decision will help solidifypic.twitter.com/PmJ2SBKgDl
and narrow the field of candidates, which will help the democratic process. As a fellow #LGBTQ candidate for federal office, I am in his debt, as are all members of this community who dare to push boundaries and seek public office like any other well qualified candidate.
I also have to compliment the American public. If there were hate memes based on Mayor Pete’s sexuality, I didn’t see them. If there were objections to his presidency based solely on who he loves, I didn’t see them. Perhaps he was too young for some, but I’d have to agree-
objections to his youth were fair. Overall, other than Mike Pence, I didn’t really see anyone try to tackle him for who he is, or who he loves, and I didn’t see anyone else try to debase his intellect based on his sexuality. What that tells me as a #gay candidate for Congress
(in Mike Pence’s home state no less!) is that America has evolved. Americans want to elect the best people to lead the best country in the world based on merit and nothing else.
That makes me so proud to be an American I’m going to play Lee Greenwood loud enough to annoy my wife.
