Amid the most serious health crisis in years, the Chinese state is still turning to a pseudoscience it cooked up for magical-nationalist reasons.

Propaganda portrays China's surveillance state as closing in on omniscience, a responsive machine oiled w/ big data that knows all. The reality is far from it. China's response to the virus, a mass mobilization tapping grassroots networks looks more akin to the Mao era.

Bounties, informant hotlines, barricaded doors and a lot of harassment: China authorities are doing everything to hunt those from Wuhan. In the process they risk eroding trust, establishing new stigmas and scattering scared carriers of the coronavirus.

  5. Faint flickering of normal life in Shanghai. At this time of year it would normally be heaving with migrant workers returning to fuel the city after spending Spring Festival at home. Subway is still unusually empty, but a handful, laden with oversized bags, were making the trip.

Meeting of China’s top leaders on the coronavirus outbreak calls it a major test of China’s governance system. It then calls for more internet/media controls, even after all the recent findings and anger about authorities blocking early online warnings.

  13. The 8% plunge in Chinese stocks today is, understandably, making headlines. But good reporters all note that this is catch-up after a long holiday. More surprising is the stability in HK market. Do investors really think they've priced in the effects of the epidemic?

A virtuoso reconstruction by and with help from a dozen other reporters on the ground in China, and top-notch editors. This is not commentary but real reporting talking to real health care workers in Wuhan. Truly a must-read.
