She returned to Malawi in 1972. I asked her why she didn’t stay and it made me sad to hear that it’s the same reason many nurses are leaving the profession now: a gaping void between rhetoric that says nurses are valued and their poor treatment including wages they can’t live on

In 1991, she flew her four children to the UK for a holiday. I was 10 years old & didn’t know what I wanted to be. She said I was set to be a nurse or a teacher. She was right about nursing & I graduated with her by my side in 2004

No change we are still traveling overseas to fill the gaps . We need to train more . Ask why we have over subscribing in some degrees not in nursing

We have to change the institutional barriers as well as giving confidence and skills to under-represented groups of staff. The latter without the former can actually make things worse by raising expectations and dashing them.

That is our biggest struggle-how do we change institutional barriers. Overseas recruitment is ongoing with out any change in treatment of these staff members! Their plight will continue.
