Great. So then what portion of the economy do these things make up? As you'd expect, it's messy, but basically the answer is just over 2% So you can have massive transformation that gets loads of attention, but in areas that take up very little of material reality + human effort

Further adventures in the economics of technology: When I get my students to talk about what industries have been upended by the Internet, they always hone in on . . . media: entertainment (Netflix, YouTube) and journalism/news. 1/2

Asked my students what percentage of retail sales were handled by e-commerce (as opposed to brick-and-mortar). Their estimates ranged from 85% to 40%, with an average around 60%. The real number is 11%. Small wonder we are overestimating the effects of change in some areas.

I’ve taken to (just utterly horribly) drawing the diffusion of technologies into society from 1850 to the present to explain to students why we don’t see the Internet making bigger contributions to economic/productivity growth.

Handed these out at my departmental faculty meeting today, our first of the semester. They were well-received.

Oh look, another self-styled tech savior who could learn a lot from STS: Pichai: "What makes me a technology optimist?... I was inspired by the ‘One Laptop per Child’ project... They didn't quite get there. But... made a lot of progress in the industry."

This is also yet another cost of having the news “tech” beat consist wholly of digital technology. If that’s all you stare at all day and you don’t understand the broader economics and history of technology, you’re likely to get overall picture wrong.

Has anyone written about how - one reason people overestimate the economic effects of the Internet - is because it nailed news media so hard and, thus, journalists act as if it’s been overwhelmingly significant?

The classic detached New Yorker voice makes this all sound a little silly. Intentional?

There must be a movement to make the Monday after the Super Bowl a holiday, right? Just so people have time to heal from their gluttony and hangovers?

Have folks in software studies written about software that is just crap? Maybe a bit like a software version of Joe Corn’s great book, User Unfriendly?

Ugh. This is the kind of sloppy use of “AI” that helps no one. Online retail is an interesting force for sure (though from another perspective it is *only* 11% of sales). But there’s a lot more to Amazon than “AI.”

Just finished William Gibson’s The Peripheral. Liked it a lot, though the ending was not my favorite. One way to take it is as a darkly cynical message: that we can’t escape our downward trajectory without a god-like intervention from outside. A bit like Moore’s Watchmen.

I declassified Paul Baran’s 1963 predictions on near-term threats and challenges created by computer networks. Here’s the cybersecurity stuff, or, “sophisticated fouling techniques for complex networks” (anyone heard of the backdoor example he mentions? )

I have made a handy Venn diagram that captures perfectly well the literature on . Feel free to use in class.
