A case study in intellectual delusion. In 1939 400 intellectual elites signed an open letter rejecting the idea that the Soviet Union was a totalitarian state and denouncing any comparison to Fascism/Nazism as an invention of "fascists and their allies." .. and the invention continued after the war, cf the "moral equivalence" argument that sought to build support for attacking the Soviet people exhausted by the 30mil lost in the war. It was exactly as morally indefensible then.

The fact is, both then and even now, the elites and the political class found socialism (whether totalitarian or not) far more unpalatable than fascism and Nazism. That is the great, unspoken and shameful truth of "the free world" the 20th century.

Since fascism and nazism both derive from socialism, I would prefer it if people understood that none of them are in any way acceptable to anyone who believes in the principles of a liberal denocracy.

Yeah, seriously. I mean, one uses solidarity and equality for its ideological core, the other in competition/anti-egalitarianism, so they're clearly very closely related.
