The only scientists who can afford to not be political are white men. Women and POC fought for their right to education, their right to practice science, and their right to be recognized for all the work they've done for STEM. They're still fighting for representation.https://twitter.com/AlHendiify/status/1213432546232549376 …

(and, spoiler alert, we don't like it when white men in science don't comment on politics, because women and POC need allies!)

Actually, I keep writing women and POC but what I should have said is "any marginalized group" including the disabled and the LGBTQ+ community.

And *STILL* getting dissed on Nobel's, or referred to as "Mrs./ Ms. so-n-so" and not "Dr, Professer," or other appropriate title achieved.

Well no, actually class is still a huge issue too. Although white men have privilege, the working and underclasses are still least likely to go to university, let alone become scientists.

Yeah, but this adds a modicum of doubt to scientific endeavors. As long as the science and the political statements remain separate, but public and peer (and publisher) could look at the statements as a lack of scientific detachment. It could derail scientific work. IMO.

You are kidding yourself if you think all science isn't affected by personal beliefs and opinions in some way. The detached, purely objective scientist is a myth. Science is funded by society, society influences science. That doesn't mean it necessarily loses its integrity.

White men are political beings too, it is just less visible because their interests tend to align with the established status quo.
