In the meantime, science communicators and healthcare practitioners would do well to remember that shaming/insulting parents and patients who are nervous and hesitant about vaccines does nothing to empower them to make the right choice.

Thanks, Sarah. Not listening to & not assuaging the fears of these people will get us nowhere. It’s sad when some scientists, albeit with good intentions, try to throw peer-reviewed literature at anti-vaxxers over social media. Facts are often useless in face of emotions.

Exactly, and it's important to make sure someone's feelings are heard and understood, like "I totally understand why vaccine ingredients are a concern for you! It's scary not to understand chemicals like [formaldehyde, what have you]. Let's talk about that."

Most of them aren't thinking about it that way. Most of them think these preventable infections "aren't a big deal" and that "natural immunity is better". Framing them as ableist may be true in your context, but it isn't necessarily the way many of them are thinking about it.
