We hope Governor Baker’s budget will offer more for public college students than tonight’s speech did, but if it doesn’t, students and their allies will turn to legislators to demand action.

Public college students are going hungry and experiencing homelessness on campus, or dropping out due to the burden of student debt. Part-time adjunct faculty are being stretched thin, teaching classes on multiple campuses and still not receiving health insurance.

While the Student Opportunity Act addresses the underfunding of K-12 schools in Massachusetts, the graduates of those schools are still entering public colleges and universities that are deeply underfunded and increasingly unaffordable.

Statement on Governor Baker’s Budget Proposal. We are hopeful about the commitment to fund the Student Opportunity Act, but incredibly frustrated at no plan to fix the funding crisis at our public colleges.

We won! We have achieved a tremendous victory for students and our communities now that the Student Opportunity Act was signed into law today by Governor Baker.

The signing of the Student Opportunity Act is one of the many victories our education justice movement in MA has won, and we’re not done. We will continue to fight for the public schools and colleges our communities deserve, and we will continue to win education justice for all.

We also must organize in our local communities to make sure that administrators and local officials spend these funds on real student needs. Please sign up to continue the fight.

“They don’t want to even apply to UMass because they see costs go up,” PHENOM VP James Cordero said, adding the state needs to invest more in public higher ed to bring costs down. “They don’t want to burden their family.”

In 2016, Q2 to expand charter schools failed by over 24%. Its biggest proponents from Beacon Hill are all still in leadership: ➡️ Robert DeLeo, Speaker ➡️ Alice Peisch, House Ed Chair ➡️ Michael Rodrigues, Senate Ways + Means Chair ➡️ Pat Haddad, Speaker pro Tempore

In FY2020 budget, lawmakers force tuition hikes on thousands of students and underfund our public colleges. We are glad the unfunded UMass tuition freeze was excluded, and we support all efforts to create a formula to end the annual ritual of underfunding public colleges in MA.

“While both budgets propose to underfund UMass, the Senate’s also proposes a tuition and fee freeze. My paycheck is determined by the Student Activities Trust Fund. With a fee freeze I’ll lose a minimum of $75 a week, which adds up to nearly $1,000 throughout the fall semester.”
