Tim Jenkins reflects on the conflict between direct action and electoral organizing. Rather than splitting the organization, SNCC opted to develop two wings under the counsel of Ella Baker.

“We met all them as freedom riders,” Dorie Ladner on meeting John Lewis and C.T. Vivian for the first time. “It was all unfolding before my eyes, as a Black Mississippian, only 19 years old at the time.”

“They were activists who cared a great deal about humanity,” Dorie Ladner on John Lewis and C.T. Vivian.

“They were people who I viewed as people with hearts of lions,” Courtland Cox. “C.T. Vivian was a person who you could not knock down.”

“John Lewis had a strong sense of right and wrong... he was always connecting with young people with a very simple message: get in the way of evil, do not allow evil to triumph,” Cox continues.
