The Society for Mental Health Research is helping find breakthroughs & cures for Australians with mental illness. However, more funding for research is desperately required so that mental health researchers can continue their work. Learn more & donate at

Other top 3 BoD fields of cancer 18%+ & cardiac 14%+of NHMRC funds. Mental illness strikes YP & rivals both in disease burden with double the economic impact of cancer. Yet MH rec’vd 3-4% of nhmrc funds. Why? OS Funders - NIH & Wellcome support Aussie MH Why not ?

Australia won't make it to this list in the future if all of our mental health researchers don't have funding to conduct any of their research and our potential future leaders are forced to seek careers elsewhere due to lack of funding.

And Australia is currently punching above its weight in mental health research. Sadly, not for much longer.

Despite all the kind words, good intentions and national forums - the results are worse! Hundreds of young Australians die, while thousands are disabled; just like those with rare cancers, their lives are on the line NOW - are they simply children of a lesser god???

60% decrease in mental health's share of NHMRC projects: <5% funding in CTCS/Ideas/Synergy to MH. NHMRC reforms have created a system that is hostile to mental health

High quality mental health care depends on the next generation of gifted researchers - particularly in clinical, public health and health services. While disappoints, private citizens, foundations and international funders value our work!

funding needs to be on the agenda of the inquiry. Can’t have an evidence based system if you don’t fund the development of the evidence base.

Massive drop in funding for MH research due to flawed new approach. A pitiful 2.7-4.6% of funding for MH, which causes 13-15% of disease burden in Aust. Despite green shoots of “million minds” in MRFF we’ve lurched backwards.Time for a major review

That is very distressing to read and I am neither a researcher nor someone with lived experience so cannot imagine how you and colleagues feel let alone those who seek answers to the eternal question of "why".
