An incredibly painful post to write. On , a soon-to-be-erased piece of grassland in West London, and how I feel it embodies our war against nature.

Kew's response on blue orchids (Part 2). Given the state of the planet, you'd expect more than incineration as "green" solution after 20+ years, more than "where we can"! Many plants had plastic wrap, plastic labels & clips. Some pots had been crushed and would not be reusable

Kew's response on blue dyed orchids (Part 1). I get the concept behind blue Dendrobiums (even if I don't agree with the way it is expressed). But what about blue Phalaenopsis plonked in a bowl? Why not use an array of other blue plants to explain the message eg blue bromeliads?

Nice to see the Temperate House at filling up! Some of the interesting current blooms: Trichodesma scotti, a Socotran borage relative; Greyia radlkoferi, the South African woolly bottlebrush and Acacia glandulicarpa, the Australian hairy-pod Wattle.

I love . I really do. But seeing dyed Phalaenopsis and cardboard boxes full of plastic-wrapped plants in plastic pots for the temporary Orchid Festival made me feel uneasy. Where is the sustainability? How is this not somehow akin to "fast plant fashion"?

In unrelated news, Luxembourg becomes the 1st country in the world to ban Glyphosate, as of today (use possible until 31 December 2020). The gov. also aims for a 50% reduction in the use of all pesticides by 2030 & hopes to inspire other EU countries 🇱🇺🇪🇺

🦊 It's 2am and I can't sleep because a fox is howling and barking loudly. From the bed, I can see him sitting on the lid of the (the thermometer tells me it's around 40°C in the compost bin so it must be quite cosy!). Luxurious London fox life, eh? 😂

Looking forward to talking about pollens tonight - causing misery and deadly reactions to millions of people around the world, but providing benefits to other areas of our lives...

A typical example of "environmentally-friendly" idea that comes with consequences...An issue in France too, as the gov. is sponsoring energy-efficient renovations - Foam insulation of roof & facades can lead to decline in bird, bat and insect populations😔

Bird song has this extraordinary soothing capacity. I listen with joy to the blackbirds, robins, wren and blue tits and instantly forget that this is Central London with road traffic, planes, and 9 million of people around. 🐦

So sad...a lynx has been shot in the Vosges mountains. With a critical population of 5 individuals, conservation organisations are calling for a reintroduction programme. Unlikely to happen, as Macron has just ended bear reintroduction in the Pyrenees... 😐

"Warning - French village" 🇫🇷 After several high profile legal cases involving roosters & frogs singing took loudly, church bells & the smell of manure, French parliament will soon debate on a proposal to protect the "Sensory heritage" of the countryside

Going past & thinking - what a missed opportunity to connect Londoners with their environment and history, by using local (brownfield!) flora, not the usual boring palette😔German projects are so ahead on this, as mentioned today by

An interesting point from on garden design. Shouldn't we be reverse engineering and setting strong sustainability targets? Eg a limit of one skip of waste for a project would encourage recycling of existing material & creative thinking too?

Why don't we get on with it? Why aren't we addressing climate change & loss of biodiversity through our actions? Denial, fatalism, desensitisation, ignorance, and focusing of information with social media. Very valid and sad points from

"A degraded landscape that will be much more bio-diverse with housing". Thought-provoking talk from on housing in the UK. We are building thousands of dormitory boxes far from any services, reliant on cars. Just the contrary of what we should been doing..
