Interesting paper from @CrowtherLab, but I share concerns on communication expressed by @pepcanadell. It should be recognised that getting to a net-zero CO2 budget requires us foremost to reduce CO2 emissions close to 0. This can unfortunately not be achieved with planting trees.https://twitter.com/pepcanadell/status/1147066574299377664 …

      Prof Sonia I. Seneviratne added,

      Pep Canadell @pepcanadell
I am disappointed that Science has allowed an abstract of a, otherwise good, paper to say that planting trees is "our most effective climate change solution to date". This is factually wrong and certainly a distraction. 1/2 http://bit.ly/2LBUbID  pic.twitter.com/QjJ3HdeLVm

A few additional points not addressed in @pepcanadell's thread, which are important to consider when planning reforestation: First, reforestation may lead to a net warming in some regions, due to albedo effects (e.g. snow shading), as shown in e.g. papers of @richardabetts.

Also evapotranspiration plays a role. Hence, one should be careful not to equate 1m2 of forest in Siberia with 1m2 of Amazon rainforest. See eg work of @mikewin_climsci (also with @TWCrowther), recently recognized by @theAGU [paper in preparation...]:https://twitter.com/SISeneviratne/status/1124275636783255552 …

Second, and just as important: Forest sinks are not guaranteed. They may be threatened by pest outbreaks, fires and climate extremes, possibly also as a result of on-going global warming.https://twitter.com/JesseJenkins/status/1134673872052260866 …

          Prof Sonia I. Seneviratne added,

This is bad. Like, lots of bad. Canadian forests have gone from absorbing ~100 million metric tons of CO2/year (MMT/y) to releasing 100-200 MMT/y. A net swing of 200-300 MMT/y is equivalent to ~12-18% of US electricity sector CO2 emissions. Not clear how we'd ever reverse this... https://twitter.com/jasonrwang/status/1134614633418022913 …

In fact, our research has shown a strong interannual correlation between land water availability & global atmospheric CO2 growth rate. Likely due in part to drought effects on ecosystems, incl. forest fires. Climate models underestimate this relationshiphttps://twitter.com/SISeneviratne/status/1034888617460748289 …

Check our new @nature study led by @vwhumphrey: Atmospheric CO2 growth rate strongly related to observed variations in global land water storage (dry and wet years). Present-day carbon cycle models underestimate this relationship. @ETH_en https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-018-0424-4 … pic.twitter.com/NHs7MVTuqW

To conclude: Afforestation can contribute to reduce climate change, but it is no silver bullet & cannot make up for the large continuing CO2 emissions. Particularly important is to avoid deforestation in ecosystems with large CO2 uptake & cooling effect on climate, e.g. Amazonia.
