Dawg I don't think you're taking anyone else's perspective seriously enough. I'm with you that shouldn't be taken as seriously as irl sets, but these tournaments are the only semblance of a competitive environment in the current world situation, and that's important to some ppl.
I agree with that, but I'm just surprised how you can't tell if someone is smurfing or not. It's on http://smash.gg , but wouldn't Ping be bad as well?

It's kind of hard to tell if the ping is bad because your opponent is too far away or if they just have bad internet. I know in my experience, I sometimes get better ping when playing people two states away than when playing people 15 minutes from my house.

I'm trying to think of a solution to this considering netplay tournaments is all we have at the moment, but just like reuqiring an Ethernet connection, it's hard to enforce before the damage has been done
