Well, humans don’t have a great track record of taking care of natural resources so any kindness nature shows us is in spite of that.

I get what you're saying, but when people say we don't deserve them, that's kind of dumb imo. I love animals as well, but humans are just different. We don't live off of raw instincts, we have free will. Humans could help nature more but that doesn't make us less than animals.
