Janet Abelson served on BART's Transit Security Advisory Committee and as the former Mayor and City Councilmember of El Cerrito, she worked with us on improvements at both BART stations in El Cerrito. We will miss you Janet!

We had the pleasure of hosting @cityofelcerrito Mayor Paul Fadelli and Councilmember Janet Abelson and @RebeccaForBART on a tour of the newly modernized El Cerrito del Norte Station today. If you haven’t seen the finished product you must check it out. New elevator, art and more.

Janet Abelson was a long time BART partner. She cared deeply about transit and we cared deeply about her. Our Board of Directors and staff worked closely with her over the years and she was a tireless advocate for a safe and accessible BART system.

Saddened by the passing of Janet Abelson today. She served on El Cerrito Council for 23 years, retiring last month. She did so much for the city and for transit, including improving accessibility of BART. We often ran into each other on BART, as pictured in this photo from 2017.

Much like our legacy fleet, 's F40 locomotives have been the workhorse of the Bay Area and a familiar face for multiple generations of Bay Areans. We will miss them 🫡

These F40 locomotives will be retired soon. They’ve been the backbone of Caltrain service for almost 40 years.

We are adding 10 car trains back as we make progress on car maintenance. 8 car trains are temporary. Unfortunately we still have many 8 car trains today but we are working as fast as we can to get the cars back in service following storm related repairs.

Shoutout @SFBART for deciding to run 10-car trains this morning. Curious to know why January 26 was when you decided to do this again but thank you.

There’s just something about BART’s bubble tiles. Long a fascination for riders, the white hexagonal tiles with a domed center have been capturing the Bay Area’s attention since the opening of BART’s Powell St. and Montgomery St. stations in 1972.

Riley Doty, a master tiler in SF said he’s especially enamored with the precision of the tiles' installation. “Looking at the results, I’ve always felt that the tilework at BART represents the highest level of what the trade offered at that point in history,” Doty said.

Why domed tile? The answer seems to be one of practicality and utility: The tiles are easy-to-clean, while the signature dome shape acts as a deterrent to graffiti. “Vandals apparently have difficulty writing on them,” a 1983 San Francisco Examiner article says of the tiles.

Powell St. and Montgomery St. stations are “premium urban stations serving riders from all walks of life and all over the world,” said District Architect Tian Feng. “The architect would say [of the bubble tiles], this is a premium material for a premium station,” Feng said.

How did the iconic tiles come to be? Unraveling the history of the bubble tile requires some detective work. Principal Architect David Pultz said the original stations were sometimes designed in pairs, including Powell St. and Montgomery St. stations.

Our ridership on Sunday, Jan 22, was 59,078, 70% of our pre-COVID budget projections for a January Sunday. That's the highest % recovery we've seen since October. Our weekend ridership has been recovering quickly. On Chinese New Year, many took BART to be with friends and family
