NEW PAPER ALERT! , Doug Koplow, and I spent over a year digging through the details of 16 subsidies to US oil and gas producers. Ploy has the definitive thread here ⬇️

Home electrification put to the test today in Seattle, below 20 degrees F outside. So far, so good! 2.5-ton heat pump for an old (1907) house, 1,500 sq. ft. No supplemental heat yet engaged (I have resistance coils for backup...)

And now, holding its own at 20 degrees F outside, for this 1907 home, with no supplemental heat engaged. Love this.

I don’t understand this argument at all. BP statistical review publishes reserves estimates based in part on government estimates annually. Plus, in any case, reserves are a mirage of a metric that can’t be observed in the real world, so, why bother?

Activists have, of course, argued for actions like fossil fuel divestment. For that to "add up" to CO2 reductions (not just reduced social license, which is also important), must increase cost of capital.

Climate wonks have long described how reducing cost of capital is key for renewables, but have tended to shy away from pointing out how increasing cost of capital for fossils can help achieve same thing.

That, in turn, helps drive auto manufacturers to make more efficient vehicles, and consumers to use them, and to drive less. This all reduces CO2 emissions.

This is super interesting. The chart just shows offshore oil, but my understanding is cost of capital for onshore projects has also trended up. Higher cost of capital increases the oil price needed for new projects to break even, which increases long-term oil price outlooks.

Up and down the I-5 corridor, people noticed 👀something odd when they looked to the east this summer: bare rock where snow and ice should be. Did you? (thread) Here’s Mt. Baker (Aug. 2004 vs. Aug. 2021) (thx Jagged Ridge Imaging for👀photos!)

"Think less about achieving your own net zero and more about what you can contribute to global net zero." Completely agree with here, and a good discussion that follows COP26: Is carbon offsetting a stalling tactic?

Wow, this article... " 'Is a person in the global South a person to me?' And if what the right answer demands of you feels extreme, consider what it would mean, in the midst of climate breakdown, to answer in the negative."
