    My senior thesis focused on the actual success or failure of women’s rights reforms in the Middle East— like the new Saudi right to drive. It’s important to keep in mind these incremental changes we hear about are used to legitimize Saudi Arabia on the international stage.

    Women also could not campaign for themselves to groups of men, needing a male representative to speak on their behalf. These circumstances make the Saudis’ lack of women at the US meeting unsurprising.

    Women were appointed to a few seats on a royal advisory council, but Saudi women have many barriers to holding political office. Granted in 2015 the chance to run for local councils, women who won were then told they’d have to participate in meetings via video from another room.

    President Trump met with the Saudis on Tuesday at the White House. There were no women at the table.
