A naive but sincere question: if a ruling is so obvious that it’s unanimous, why did it need to go to SCOTUS in the first place? It’s often said they get only the toughest cases.

Private prisons have to make money.

All the prisons make money off prisoners. Pay them eleven cents an hour to assemble things so a company can put "made in the USA" on the tag. Charge prisoners to read a book, to receive their mail, to speak with their family, for necessities like soap and toiletries.
