Censorship is only part of the process of brainwashing. But yes, I do see many Chinese as cynical and questioning. But they are still victims of brainwashing.

Even if one tries to be open-minded and somehow gets around censorship, one still will tend to go with what one was taught in school and in the state media.

Exactly my experience. It is bias and prejudice - from both sides - that creates mainland indifference to the HK protests.Treating the situation as 'if only the poor brainwashed mainland slaves knew the truth like we do' is condescending as hell.

That is absolutely a misconception about Hong Kong protesters. Oh but still they say it is us who are xenophobic. The author failed to realise that before the protests many younger generations were very open to mainland culture. They even went to Shenzhen for weekend trips.

And SCMP, ironically, is blocked from China as well. Look at the websites he cited. And some of the news outlets China blocked: NY times, WSJ, TIME, BBC, the Economist. So while not a complete censorship, it does fail to offer people another perspective of the view.
