Excellent article. This is key - " it is important to emphasise that a democratically elected government need not be one that is constantly at odds with Beijing, as mainland officials may fear, but one that could find its voice to explain Hong Kong’s concerns when necessary."

Since 1997, all four cheif executives had failed to bring peace between Hong Kong and Beijing. Beijing should seriously re-evaluate her policies/ tactics over the governance of HKSAR.

The deeper underlying issue is the HK government inability to defend autonomy for which the cure is the promised democratic reform that it has yet to materialize The difficulty driving the crisis is local autonomy has shrunk considerably due to increasing Beijing interference

That’s why this is one of the five demands. But as long as Beijing is so obsessed with power, it won’t be possible. This is a matter of life or death now.

Not convincing. 1. HK gov is already the moderate, democratic opposition to Beijing. 2. Radical "pro-democracy" camp has lost much credit & trust with violence & sinophoby & support of foreign interference. 3. Rights of Chinese citizens in a Chinese city not even considered.
