There is no Kurdish "heartland" in Syria. Even the North-East is predominantly Arab with many Christians which wish to be governed by Syria, not a Kurdish militia. Kurds in the area immigrated in the last 100 years as refugees from Turkey, most recent wave was in 1980s.
