The govt has all the time in the world. They can sit back and watch HK kill itself. Anyone with power or money has a 2nd passport and can leave anytime. It's the poor that are going to suffer the most. And we all know HK doesn't give a crap about the poor.

Sounds reasonable, however requires maturity and common sense from that half of HKer supporting protests. There was no sign of any of these virtues recently among those who feel culturally so superior.

There are 3 underlying problem areas :slow pace of political reform towards universal suffrage; outrage at the enormous & increasing disparity in wealth, crystallised by the absurd property price levels & friction between Hongkongers and mainlanders during social interaction.
