He's in big trouble. Many countries in Asia do not allow dual citizenships. It's a crime. You can only have one passport.

Confused. Has he been detained in China as a Canadian citizen or he is in Canada facing accusations from Chinese government?

China doesn't recognize dual citizenship, and assuming he's entered and stayed as Chinese national then his Canadian status wouldn't help much

China is increasingly not going to recognize foreign citizenships obtained by Chinese nationals, similar to the practice of the US. I recall that there was a draft rule in China that would require PRC citizens to formally renounce PRC citizenship, which many would not do.

It is entirely incorrect that US does not recognize foreign citizenships obtained by US citizens!!
