My 2 cents: It is hard to imagine the NYT would have given anonymity on something like this to someone who was not at least as high as a cabinet secretary or assistant to the president.

Kavanaugh has a brief window to apologize, say he didn’t understand, meet Guttenberg and get this right. Or he will have a stain on his reputation he’ll regret forever.

What’s weird is that this is what a mafia boss would try and do behind scenes. With Trump, his disregard for law and the Constitution and his manipulation of justice and the media is all out in the open. He’s flamboyant about it.

Woodward pp133: Sean Spicer...tried several times to persuade Mattis to appear on Sunday talk shows... The answer was always no. 'Sean," Mattis finally said, "I've killed people for a living. If you call me again, I'm going to fucking send you to Afghanistan. Are we clear?"

Not sure what part of the Woodward book quotes Kelly is denying, but multiple current and former officials say they're heard him say "crazytown," "worst job in the world" and something about Trump not listening to him.
