I'm thrilled to share that I've joined a newly formed product design team on ethics, trust, culture, & humanity (ETCH) for the Bing, Search and Ads design studio @ Microsoft. tl;dr I'll be doing a LOT of research & design work on ethical / trustworthy AI. (1/4)

"AI" is a political descriptor, not a scientific phenomenon. Systems that are described as "artificial intelligence" are actually just dynamic regression models running biased, fuzzy math that output indicators allowing humans to outsource decision-making agency to machines. /1

Also according to California law, they have to tell you the budgeted salary range for the position.

An important point I forgot: if you're in California it's against the law to ask for your salary history (but not your salary *expectation*). Don't give either but they shouldn't even ask for the former.

The FATE group at MSR-NYC still has a couple summer intern openings for PhD students with an interest in responsible AI and experience with semi-structured interviews, co-design, and HCI methods generally. Interested? Email me and with your research background!

I've gotten to collaborate with a bunch of the researchers from Microsoft Research, and honestly, the social science folks there are rad and where the proverbial (academic) party is at. Signal boosting that my anthro /cscw / anthro friends in grad school should apply ✨

It’s fascinating to hear folks from diff backgrounds reflect on tech. I’ve always loved building social structures and addressing inequities. Since tech is in vogue and is an industry with power to shape social lives, I’ll learn the tech. But it’s always been about the ppl.

Sometimes you need code or math. Sometimes you need sociology. Sometimes you need UX. Sometimes you need law. Sometimes it's hard to figure out which you need. This conference has done a great job of putting people who do various ones of those in the same room

I wondered why , who uses face surveillance at several US airports, doesn't use it at SeaTac. Turns out Port of Seattle commissioners rejected it after community activism. Learned this at craft session on community based tech.

is emphasizing to me how we need programmers’ & statisticians’ skills not for predicting individual deviance from majority norms but for diagnosing & documenting disparities to support more collective interventions rather than pathologizing individuals.

I wish I got the full quote, but has been mic dropping this discussion around (better) approaches to data collection, the similarity of the practice between data science and ethnography, and invocation for researchers get messy describing how they get data.
