There is no such thing as harmless quackery. There are only degrees of harm. People who ask “What’s the harm?” when defending certain bogus interventions are focused only on direct injuries. It’s more complicated than that.

There is financial harm. There is the risk of delaying appropriate care. There is the increased pain and suffering. There is also the more general harm of denigrating science-based medicine, of reducing cultural scientific literacy.

While I'm aware of the difference between SBM and EBM, how would you crystallize that in a way that's easily accessible? I feel like I'm gonna give an hour long lecture every time I try to explain it.

I think that it’s EBM with increases focus on prior plausibility, taking basic fundamental science into account, that handles modern pseudomedicine better.

That's how I see it too. But first, you have to drive it across that science isn't a conspiracy. Then, you gotta establish that not everything that looks like science is science. I think the hardest part is giving people guidelines about what's supported in the end.

Right, that science isn’t just “another way of knowing”.https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/science-based-medicine-versus-other-ways-of-knowing/ …

Can't believe I missed that one. It had me in the first half thinking "I know but this isn't convincing anyone else", but it eloquently addresses questions I get whenever I try to push for science. Stellar article, even for @gorskon.
