I personally believe the long term trend is towards fully automated luxury communism. But not yet.

Really? Seems very questionable that devolving power is going to be net positive. Big empirical question of whether any specific proposed alternative is good. Burden of proof on new system, I say. twitter.com/moskov/status/…

These are conceptually tactics rather than cause areas, and we use them when the EV looks good.

Not sure if you’re still doing this. Has there been any look into effective altruism but for public policy and political donations? Like what’s a good return on investment of total good done for those two areas?

We advocated to balance the low inflation and low unemployment mandates more than has been done historically. The past two years have been highly unusual but I think that will still be right in future more normal times. I hope future times are more normal anyway.

Until last year OpenPhil funded advocacy for higher inflation, and now it’s too high (I wrote about this here: forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/cDdcNzyi). What’s your take on this?

A general answer to “what about X cause” - EA looks for the very most leveraged opportunities on the margin with finite time and money, rather than tries to form an opinion on everything. Many *great* opportunities are left out as a result of that practical optimization.

There used to be many fewer causes - scale has given the movement vastly more reach and scope, and I hope that it continues to grow and evolve. But first things first.

A general answer to “isn’t this all just a scam/for your own aggrandizement/to entrench existing power structures?” Honestly I think about the ego piece a lot and actively try not to feed it (eg by not putting my name on things).

But maybe it is a factor! I have not yet achieved ego death. If it’s the *only* point though, I feel like I could have chosen many easier ways with this amount of money. And, when we’re done, I will be separated from the capital. So at least one less ultra powerful person.

The math on this concentration: all EA giving in 2021 was roughly 0.2% of all giving. $1B vs $500B So I don’t sweat it too much. may have crowded out some good podcasts over the summer, however.

Does the world benefit from the concentration of charity dollars though? Reducing the kurtosis of the distribution of world’s charity dollars could lead to money that would otherwise fund a moonshot charity instead going to bed nets, which seems worrying and underconsidered.

Good q! In short, bc I'm still young and can continue building the wealth with my career, so I don't see this as the utility maximizing move. It's very plausible though that the community would disagree with me (i.e. they think they'd invest it better).

Wikipedia says you still have about $10.9bn – why not give that all to Open Phil now and give up being a billionaire? (If the answer is "option value", OP doesn't have to spend it all immediately.)
