Who do you think owns Tether and Bitfinex? From my understanding it's a pretty complicated mix of shareholders and companies (some possibly of the shell company variety).

hm I was assuming some combination of the principles and some VCs
but more generally that this wasn't a case of people pretending not to own what they do or something

I'm not sure about that. I don't think the Tether/Bitfinex connection was publicly known until it was discovered in the Paradise Papers.
