My guess is that the FT journalist took the

quote out of context to support his thesis in the article. I believe that Sam supports Bitcoin and understands that lots of work is happening on the payments side (ie.: lightning).

Exchanges need to keep everything obfuscated in order to keep the casino business going. Saying that BTC has no future as a payment network is like saying roads have no future as a travel network (and omiting that it is because you still need cars).
