"worrying about harmful side effects" costs you nothing, is high status in the EA community, and is usually not done enough so it seems prudent.
Taking the other side of this argument makes you seem risky/reckless/short-sighted/etc.
I'm not surprised it's the top post.

Meta commentary also doesn't require object level knowledge about any particular global problems or how to solve them, so everyone can participate and take an interest.
