think he was generally well liked on pats though may have been some COVID-related issues (think he wasn't vaxxed and kept catching it)
but requesting to be released if not the started seems totally plausible
I think he was also unvaccinated which could lead to problems down the line due to league regulations on Covid. He missed time last season due to Covid and I think some preseason stuff because of it too.

But also Mac Jones looking good was probably the big nail in the coffin. No real reason to keep cam if you think you have the guy you probably want to start for the next decade or so.
Couldn’t have Mac Jones become the leader of the locker room the the shadow (and big personality) of Cam over his shoulder.
